Addressing the Challenges of Reinforced Concrete Structures

Reinforced concrete structures are vulnerable to a range of issues that, if left untreated, can accelerate deterioration. These problems often stem from initial construction defects, poor detailing, and the cumulative effects of environmental exposure over time. In taller structures, the spalling of cover concrete poses significant safety risks to both owners and occupants. Accurate inspection and thorough testing are critical to properly assess the condition of any reinforced concrete element, forming the foundation for designing a durable and effective repair strategy.

CONCRETE REPAIR & PROTECTION

Protecting Concrete Against Environmental Deterioration

Concrete must be properly maintained and protected to withstand the environmental conditions it is exposed to. Common causes of deterioration include atmospheric pollution, chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcing steel, poor construction quality, and chemical attacks. Without proper protection, these factors can significantly compromise the strength, durability, and lifespan of concrete structures.

INTRUSIVE & NON-INTRUSIVE SITE INVESTIGATIONS

Comprehensive Structural Surveys and Assessments

Spec-Tech offers both intrusive and non-intrusive surveys on reinforced and mass concrete, brickwork, and related materials affected by water ingress, subsidence, fire damage, and other forms of deterioration. Our expert assessments evaluate the condition and extent of damage, determining the structure’s suitability for effective repair or, if necessary, reconstruction.

SPRAYED CONCRETE

Sprayed Concrete Solutions for Complex and Structural Applications

Sprayed concrete is a construction method where concrete or mortar is applied by pneumatically projecting it onto a surface at high velocity. This approach allows the material to adhere and compact upon impact, removing the need for conventional formwork. The technique produces a dense, well-bonded layer and enables quick and efficient application, making it especially suitable for tunnelling projects, retaining walls, and structural repair or strengthening works. referred to as Shotcrete) is the method by which concrete is sprayed into place, rather than the more conventional pouring method.

Sprayed Concrete is an all-inclusive term that describes concrete or mortar conveyed through a hose and pneumatically projected at high velocity onto a surface.

Gunite and Shotcrete are terms which were used, incorrectly, to distinguish dry-mix and wet-mix Sprayed Concrete.

STRUCTURAL WATERPROOFING

Comprehensive Waterproofing Solutions for New and Existing Structures

Sprayed Applied
A spray-applied waterproofing membrane forms a continuous, fully bonded barrier that protects structures from water ingress. Applied in liquid form using specialist spray equipment, the membrane cures rapidly to create a seamless and uniform layer across the substrate, eliminating joints or overlaps that could otherwise become points of weakness. This method allows the waterproofing to conform closely to complex geometries and irregular surfaces, ensuring consistent coverage even in difficult-to-access areas.

Once cured, the membrane provides durable protection against groundwater penetration and moisture migration, helping to preserve the integrity of the structure and reduce the risk of long-term deterioration. Spray-applied systems are commonly used in underground structures, basements, tunnels, and other environments where a reliable and continuous waterproofing barrier is essential for maintaining structural performance and service life.

Tanking – Sheet Systems & Liquid Applied
Tanking membranes are waterproofing solutions engineered to stop water from penetrating structures, especially those situated below ground level. They are usually applied to walls and slabs to form a seamless barrier capable of withstanding hydrostatic pressure from surrounding soil and groundwater. Depending on design needs, these membranes can be installed internally or externally and are available in either sheet or liquid-applied formats. Tanking systems are widely used in basements, tunnels, lift pits, and other subterranean structures to keep interiors dry and safeguard structural elements against moisture-related damage.

INDUSTRIAL FLOORING & REPAIR SOLUTIONS

Specialists in Resin Flooring Installation and Concrete Repair Solutions

Industrial flooring systems deliver a durable, high-performance surface designed to endure heavy machinery, forklift traffic, and exposure to chemicals. Available in a variety of finishes—from smooth, polished concrete to resin-based coatings—these floors combine functional resilience with safety, making them ideal for demanding industrial and commercial environments.

Repairing industrial floors entails restoring surfaces affected by heavy traffic, machinery, chemical exposure, or everyday wear. This can involve crack repair, resurfacing worn areas, replacing damaged concrete sections, or applying specialized coatings to reinstate strength, durability, and safety. Proper floor repair extends the lifespan of the flooring while promoting a safe working environment by minimizing trip hazards, preserving slip resistance, and preventing further structural deterioration.

CORROSION PREVENTION AND PROTECTION SYSTEMS

Specialists in Resin Flooring Installation and Concrete Repair Solutions

Once corrosion begins in the steel reinforcement of reinforced concrete structures, deterioration tends to accelerate and repair costs can increase substantially. For assets such as bridges, car parks, marine infrastructure, and industrial facilities, maintaining the integrity of the reinforcement is essential to ensure structural safety, extend service life, and minimise whole-life costs. Corrosion caused by carbonation and chloride ingress can reduce structural capacity and create additional hazards, including the risk of falling concrete and other safety issues. Conventional concrete repairs alone are often ineffective at preventing further deterioration. Although specialist coatings and corrosion inhibitors can perform well in lower-risk environments, cathodic protection is generally considered the most effective solution for structures exposed to a high risk of chloride-induced corrosion.

DESIGN, APPLICATION, AND CONTRACTOR RECOMMENDATION

Specialists in Resin Flooring Installation and Concrete Repair Solutions
